The Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT is part of the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft which is the leading organization for applied research in Europe. Its research activities are conducted by 67 institutes and research units at locations throughout Germany. The Fraunhofer Gesellschaft employs a staff of 24,000 people and works with an annual research budget of more than 2.1 billion euros.
The Fraunhofer IPT combines long time knowledge and experience in all areas of production technology. Located in Aachen, the Fraunhofer IPT offers clients and project partners special and immediate practical solutions for a connected, adaptive production in the fields of process technology, production machines, production quality and metrology as well as technology management.
Production is not only understood as individual operations but as an assemblage of production processes that links all the elements of the overall process in its entirety – from pre- and product development, through production preparation and assembly to the manufacturing.
The business activities consider individual tasks and challenges within the following branches, technologies and product areas: Tool and die making, optics, turbo machinery, life sciences engineering, and lightweight production technology.
The Fraunhofer IPT employs a staff of approximately 450, currently working on projects in 9000 m² facilities. 5000 m² of that space are being used for laboratories and machine halls. At the Fraunhofer Center for Manufacturing Inovation CMI in Boston (MA), we offer our customers a long-term technology transfer between European and American industries.

The Fraunhofer-Institute for Environmental, Safety, and Energy Technology UMSICHT (Fraunhofer UMSICHT) is part of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft e.V. (FhG) which is a link between scientific research and industrial applications. The institute that is focused on technical innovations in the fields of environmental, material, process and energy technology is the Fraunhofer UMSICHT, the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety, and Energy Technology in Oberhausen (NRW) with more than 500 employees and 12 spin-off enterprises. Fraunhofer UMSICHT´s objective is the advancement of sustainable economies, environmentally friendly technologies and innovative approaches to improve the standard of living and to promote the innovation capacity of the economy. The three departmental sections – Energy, Products and Processes – together with its institute branch Sulzbach-Rosenberg (Bavaria) develop economy-applied concepts and processes for the provision and use of energy, raw materials and components, accompanying customers from the process idea to the pilot plant and from product development to pilot production. The laboratory infrastructure comprises a chemical analysis laboratory, a biotechnology laboratory, a physics laboratory and a chemical laboratory as well as a high pressure and an energy storage laboratory (laboratory und technical area ~ 4500 m²). With particular interest for the innovative project, Fraunhofer UMSICHT brings expertise in formulation, characterisation and application of a photosensitive polymer lacquer based on water with preferentially green chemicals.

Laser Engineering Applications SA
Created in 1999, LASEA is a high-tech Belgian SME which has a unique expertise in the design, manufacture and use of laser systems for industrial purposes. More specifically, LASEA offers cutting edge laser solutions capable of responding to the needs of companies whose production lines include plastic welding, marking, and surface treatments.

Its laser products and services are: expertise and prototype development, OEM systems, laser workstations, turn-key machines. LASEA is based on the Liège Science Park allowing it to have strong partnership with regional Universities and the Space Centre. With presently 46 people, LASEA has manufactured laser production lines all over the world (Europe, US, Australia …). Certified ISO9001:2008, LASEA has 5 patents in the field of laser processing. For example LASEA has developed since 1999 a method for locally removing a coat applied on a translucent or transparent substrate (patent EP1263538).

LASEA’s activity consists in implementing laser solutions in its laser station range. This range of stations is dedicated to particular applications according to the will of the customer: micromachining, texturing, plastic welding, decoating, engraving, etc. Therefore, the design and development of these stations is fitted to the special solution developed by LASEA’s engineers for the customer’s application.

Lasea has years of experience in laser processing including laser plastic welding, marking and micromachining.

AMPLITUDE SYSTEMES is a French company with more than 130 employees and located in Pessac, close to Bordeaux.
AMPLITUDE SYSTEMES, being one of the first companies to introduce industrial femtosecond lasers on the market, is recognized as a world leader in its field, and it has pioneered many new products over the years.
Markets include scientific applications such as cellular imaging as well as high-end industrial applications of ultrafast lasers.
AMPLITUDE SYSTEMES has sales points in Europe, Asia and in the United States. Products include ultrafast diode-pumped Ytterbium lasers, using crystals as the amplifier medium, as well as high power fibre amplifiers.

Micrometal GMBH
MICROMETAL was founded in 2006 in Müllheim / Baden, it has 50 employees and it is specialized in industrial production of highly accurate metal micro components. The MICROMETAL production technology is a Reel to Reel UV lithography process – also often referred to as Inline photochemical machining (PCM) process. During a fully interlinked and highly automated manufacturing process, metal coils are structured in a seamless endless and continuous operation by UV lithography and is designed for 24/7 mass production conditions.
At the end of the Inline operation the finished components can be rewound onto coils or cut into individual sheets. Coils ranging from 0.025mm – 0.500mm (1 mil – 19.6 mil) material thickness and a width of up to 330mm (up to 13 inches) can be processed. Steel types mostly used are: Steel and stainless steel (e.g. SS 316L or SS 301), Iron-Nickel-alloys, Aluminum and aluminum alloys,
Copper and copper alloys (e.g. bronze, brass, copper beryllium), Metal-film laminates and mostly all kinds of Clad metal (composite metal with two or more different layers). When structuring both sides of a metal strip, the position of the structures can be aligned with extreme precision. Single-sided chemical milling (to create a so-called half etch) and two-sided openings can be combined as needed. For instance, MICROMETAL is able to create capillary effects for fluids by etching extremely fine channels into the metal surface.
The company is certified according ISO TS 16949:2009, EN ISO 13485:2003 + AC:2009 and the ISO 14001 is planned for Q2/2015.

Next Scan Technology BVBA
Next Scan Technology – NST – enables best of class material processing through the introduction of innovations into the scanner world for both legacy and ultra-short pulsed lasers.
Ultrafast pulsed lasers are now being adopted as the new workhorse in the processing of materials such as metals, glass, silicon, ceramics and thin film. With validated benefits in high yield and efficiency, the potential of ultrafast lasers can now be leveraged with the Next Scan Technology.
The polygon scanner solution allows for a high speed beam deflection. The NST patented technology integrating full telecentric large area f-Theta optics and proprietary SuperSyncunlock the potential of the newest MHz pico- and femtosecond pulsed lasers.
With the technology and organisation in place Next Scan Technology aims todevelop strong ties with domain players and develop the technology into application specific engine solutions. The latter is aimed at the broader market of OEM, large scale system integrators and end-users.
In this PoLaRoll project Next Scan Technology is reviewing individual system requirements in research and development and complementary technologies for laser processing.

Lunovu GMBH
LUNOVU Integrated Laser Solutions GmbH is a machine manufacturer from the Aachen region with close ties to the university atmosphere, in particular the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology. The focus of the company lies in the field of machine processing with laser radiation. As well as machine manufacturing, LUNOVU GmbH is also present in the field of software development. Founded in July 2013, the company now has 14 employees and it is rapidly growing. In 2015, LUNOVU recorded a turnover of €830,000. In 2016 LUNOVU expects a turnover of €1.000,000.  In the field of research and development, the employees of LUNOVU GmbH have, through their experience and expertise, set the goals of furthering and building upon existing technology. Product evolution and ”Product revolution” are defined goals that LUNOVU strives to achieve. Due to diverse work experience at other companies and extended technical knowledge in certain fields, the team of LUNOVU GmbH gathered fundamental knowledge in surface processing with different materials and laser types. Through this past experience, systems for measuring and polishing metal and glass surfaces have been invented.

A specific example includes a test system ”On The Fly” for the processing of surfaces. This innovation consists of a scanner that projects a certain design on the surface of a rapidly moving part with linear laser radiation. A further application was the production of a machine for linear projection on parts with a polygon scanner.

In 2014 LUNOVU built a UKP system that, at this time, is being used for the realization of different medical applications (e.g. cutting of stents). This system is also being investigated for use at other industry requests. The first experiences with the integration of laser based machine components in Roll-to-Roll machines were received through cooperation with the Coatema GmbH. LUNOVU GmbH is in contact with many laser manufactures. Therefore the company has the possibility to satisfy requirements with different radiation sources for utilisation and optimisation. Due to the cooperation with the Fraunhofer-Institute for Laser Technology in Aachen, the access to the facilities and the support of scientific and technical personal is also possible.
